Sublimation vs Screen Printing for Team Apparel
Choose using the actual fabric, artwork and complete order quote. Check a finished sample before approving your uniforms or team shirts.
When choosing sublimation vs screen printing for team apparel, start with the garment you want players to wear. A print method must suit that fabric and the design. Ask for the same sizes, art and arrival date in each quote.

What is sublimation printing?
Epson's dye-sublimation guide describes printing onto transfer paper and using heat to transfer the design to polyester fabric or a polyester-coated surface. It recommends white or light-colored polyester for that process and advises avoiding cotton or dark fabric.
For sublimated jerseys, review the supplier's garment template and sample. Confirm the print areas, final colors and any changes needed for youth sizes. Get the exact fabric and care instructions with the order.
What is direct screen printing?
Direct screen printing applies ink through screens onto the garment. The design's color layers determine the screens needed. RushOrderTees describes the process and says small printed orders may use a digital method instead.
Ask which ink and method the quote uses for your chosen shirt. Check the design dimensions, colors and locations. A fan shirt and a performance jersey need their own garment and print review.
For price, compare full quotes. Custom Ink's pricing explanation lists the product, colors and quantity as main factors. It does not give a universal order size where one method becomes cheaper.
Check the other method quoted
A transfer or stitched logo may suit a different part of the order.
DTF uses printed film, adhesive and heat application. Epson's transfer-process help describes those steps. Ask for the actual transfer product and its compatibility with your shirt. Our DTF vs screen printing guide explains the sample and quote checks.
Embroidery sews thread into the garment. It needs a review of logo detail, size and fabric support. Custom Ink's embroidery guide discusses tiny text and detailed artwork. Use our embroidery comparison for polos and hats.
Heat-applied decoration is a broad description. Ask the supplier to name the method, material and instructions on the quote. For names and numbers, confirm the price and proof for each player's details.
Checks for your uniform order
Approve the actual art
Check the supplier's template, print areas, names and numbers before approval.
Handle a sample
Review the finish on the proposed garment and ask for its care instructions.
Compare the full total
Include artwork, personalization, setup, delivery and any other quoted charges.
Confirm the arrival plan
Ask when the complete order should arrive and when your proof must be approved.
Name the fabric
Put the exact garment and material on the quote so the supplier can confirm compatibility.
Plan a late addition
Ask for the price, minimum and timing for two more items using the approved design.
Compare the finished order
Send each supplier the same garment, youth/adult size list, art file and decoration dimensions. Include names, numbers, the delivery address and the date you need the gear in hand.
Handle a decorated sample when available. Check a design close to the size you plan to order. Ask for care instructions and any written warranty for that finished item, rather than relying on a general claim about the method.
Record the complete delivered total and a separate quote for two late-player pieces. Confirm whether the reorder keeps the same garment and decoration. For an ongoing team store, ask how those additions will be ordered and shipped.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sublimation better than screen printing for jerseys?
Start with the exact fabric and artwork. Sublimation uses a polyester-compatible surface. Ask the supplier to show the proposed finish and print areas for your jersey. Compare another method if it better suits the selected garment.
Which is cheaper, sublimation or screen printing?
Request complete quotes for the same garment, art, sizes, quantity and arrival date. Include preparation, personalization and shipping. A method name does not establish a universal price winner or order-size cutoff.
Can you sublimate on cotton?
Epson's dye-sublimation guidance calls for polyester fabrics or polyester-coated surfaces and advises avoiding cotton for that process. Confirm the exact garment and decoration system in your quote instead of assuming any shirt will work.
What is DTF printing and how does it compare?
Direct-to-film prints a design on film, uses adhesive and applies it with heat. Fabric compatibility depends on the actual transfer. Confirm the proposed product, decorated sample and care instructions; this guide does not rank its lifespan against sublimation.
How long do sublimated uniforms last?
We have not tested a lifespan for this guide. Ask about the finished garment, care instructions and any written warranty. The dye process alone does not promise a number of seasons or unlimited wash life.
When should I ask about screen printing?
Ask for a direct screen-print quote when the selected garment and shared design suit that process. Confirm the ink, print dimensions, colors, full total and price for later additions.
